Crowdconvention 2011: a designer’s tale
June 27, 2011… collaboration or expressions such as doing things together.”
Needless to say, Ville and Jeff Howe (inventor of the term crowdsourcing) had a “frank” post-speech chat (I’m relieved to report both of them came away unharmed).
Harri Holopainen, Microtask’s managing director, was our champion on a panel discussing current industry concerns (at least, those concerns people were willing to air in public). The focus was mainly on microworker rights and covered issues like low …

January 10, 2011… about steam trains.
But perhaps it’s time to think again when it comes to non-professionals. Jeff Howe, one of crowdsourcing’s founding fathers, certainly thinks so. In his recent book Crowdsourcing: Why the power of the crowd is driving the future of business, Howe devotes a whole chapter to the valuable role played by amateurs through history. Looking back nearly 400 years, he discusses how the “gentleman scientists” of the 17th century collaborated, by mail, to form a major …

June 13, 2011… generally considered to be a modern invention. Like many people, I first came across the term in Jeff Howe’s 2006 article The Rise of Crowdsourcing. I was impressed by Jeff’s ideas, but reading the article I began to think: “somehow this concept sounds very familiar”.
Then I realized why. Crowdsourcing is really just a new name for a very old Finnish idea: talkoot.
Talkoot is a form of collective voluntary work that’s been practiced in Finland for over 1300 years. The concept …
